I believe Tim is an outstanding candidate for City Council.  I first met Tim and his wife Kate when our children attended IAA together as elementary school students.  Tim and Kate are deeply committed to our community, and their kids are in Burlington schools.  Tim's an independent thinker with excellent judgment and a love for Burlington.  I know Tim will serve our community well, and I hope you will join me in supporting his campaign.

Doherty is, without a doubt, our best council candidate. Over the years Tim has shown his commitment to preserving what's best about the East District (and our unique neighborhoods) and working hard to find solutions to our most vexing problems. Tim's history and experience of community service, professional excellence, and business and civic leadership shows that he will be a hard-working and independent-minded voice supporting our needs on City Council.

Nancy Kaplan
Former City Councilor

As a resident of the East District and former City Councilor, I believe that Tim Doherty would make an excellent representative for our neighborhoods. He has a proven track record of community service and has demonstrated a deep commitment to making Burlington a better place for everyone.

I can't think of anyone who knows and cares about Burlington and its residents more than Tim Doherty. Tim lives here, he works here, he has three children in the Burlington school system—he's deeply connected as a parent, a professional, and an all-around active BTV resident. I'm not kidding when I say I won the neighbor lottery when Tim and his family parked their lives next to mine in Ward 1. They actively reach out to connect and strengthen our community.

Tim's heart and soul will certainly serve us, but that's not all he'll bring to City Council. I also can't think of anyone with more integrity or capacity for rigorous work than Tim. He's a disciplined thinker and a skilled communicator who understands a city councilor's job involves tedious analysis and work toward consensus. He knows how to listen, clarify, and connect information and ideas for understanding and better planning and spending.

Tim has everything this important job demands to represent us all responsibly. On March 7, 2023, let's get out and vote for someone we can count on to promote the health, safety, and services Burlington needs to prosper, for the wellbeing of all its residents. Thank you, Tim Doherty, for stepping up and being our candidate.

Town Meeting Day ballots will arrive soon, and I encourage voters in the East District to vote for Tim Doherty for City Council. Tim will be an honest, thoughtful, and worthy successor to Councilor Brandt, who has chosen not to run for re-election.

Tim is a careful decision-maker. He is focused on the details that the devil hides in and is concerned with the risks of unanticipated consequences. He is neither an ideologue nor a pedant. He seeks a solid understanding of an issue before making a decision. As folks who attended the Ward 1 NPA meeting last week observed, you shouldn't expect a 'knee-jerk' opinion or a digressive pivot from Tim – he stays on-topic, tells you what he thinks and why, and if he needs a better understanding of an issue before making a decision, he will say so.

He seeks civil dialog, the possibility of disagreeing without being disagreeable (a rare and refreshing attribute these days) and he wants to focus on outreach and responsiveness to his constituents' interests and needs.

Perhaps one of Tim's strongest attributes, which has been lacking in so many recent candidates for City Council, is an understanding that the role of the City Council is governance, and he has a good understanding of the power and limitations of the role. For example, he strongly believes work needs to be done to make UVM a better neighbor, but he is careful not to make unkeepable promises. Tim will be a good city councilor because he understands what it means to be a city councilor.

You'll be receiving your ballots in the mail soon. Mail them in or go to the polls on March 7th, and help elect Tim Doherty our next East District City Councilor. People, not Parties.

We are writing to offer our unreserved and enthusiastic support for Tim Doherty for City Council. Tim has been a trusted friend and neighbor since we moved to Burlington seven years ago. In that time, we have found him to be hard-working, honest, and trustworthy. He is committed to our city and has shown that in ways big and small--from his morning chats with neighbors while walking his dog to larger-scale volunteer projects.

We can't wait to vote for Tim on Town Meeting Day and hope you do too.
